Advisory Board
We are very pleased to announce the formation of our Advisory
Board and to announce that Cemal Kafadar, Fouad Makhzoumi, Richard Murphy
'51, Essam Al-Tamimi LL.M. '84, and Ahmed Zaki Yamani LL.M. '56 have agreed
to serve on the Board.
The Executive Board will consult with members of the Advisory
Board regarding the initiatives we pursue. Advisory Board members are
appointed by the Executive Board and will serve on the Board for three
year terms.
Cemal Kafadar
Cemal Kafadar is Vehbi Koç Professor of Turkish Studies
and former Director for the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard
University. Kafadar is interested in the social and cultural history of
the Middle East and Southeastern Europe in the early modern era. He teaches
seminars on archival research and on popular culture. Professor Kafadar's
acclaimed 1996 book, Between Two Worlds: The Construction of the Ottoman
State, addresses debates about the founding of the Ottoman empire. Previously,
Kafadar authored The Ottomans and Europe 1400-1600.
Professor Kafadar, who joined the Department of History in
1990, was born in Istanbul. He received a bachelor's degree from Hamilton
College and a doctorate in Islamic studies from McGill University.
Fouad Makhzoumi
Fouad Makhzoumi has been extensively involved in Middle East
development projects. Mr. Makhzoumi served as the President of the International
Desalination Association (IDA) between 1995 and 1997, and is currently
the Controller of the Association. He served as Vice Chairman of the Institute
for Social and Economic Policy in the Middle East at the John F. Kennedy
School of Government at Harvard University, between 1995 and 1998 and
has served as member of the International Board of the “Council
on Foreign Relations –US/Middle East Project”, since 1996.
Mr. Makhzoumi was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He received his
undergraduate degree and masters degrees in chemical engineering from
Michigan Technological University in the US. He is currently Chairman
and President of Future Pipe Industries, a global pipe manufacturing company
headquartered in Dubai and employing 3,500 people.
Richard W. Murphy
Retiring from government service in 1989, Mr. Murphy joined
the Council on Foreign Relations in New York as the Hasib J. Sabbagh Senior
Fellow for the Middle East. Mr. Murphy is a trustee of the American University
of Beirut, on the Board of the Near East Foundation and Chairman of the
Middle East Institute in Washington.
Essam Al Tamimi
Essam Al Tamimi is a native of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
He received his LL.B. from Al Ain University, UAE, in 1983 and his LL.M.
from Harvard Law School in 1984. Tamimi founded Al Tamimi & Company
in 1989 after working for six years with the British law firm of Clifford
Chance in their London and Dubai offices. He began publishing the firm's
monthly newsletter, "Law Update", in 1991, and continues to
write articles for international legal publications on a regular basis.
In addition, he is a frequent speaker at local and international conferences
and seminars and has published a handbook for business people new to the
Emirates entitled "Setting Up In Dubai."
Ahmed Zaki Yamani
Ahmed Zaki Yamani has been a prominent Saudi politician, lawyer
and intellectual. He served as Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources
between 1962 and 1986. He studied at Cairo, New York, and Harvard (LL.M.
'56) universities. Yamani served as the first Secretary General of the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and is regarded as
the architect of many of the Kingdom's modern laws and regulations.
